Historic Cultūra Film Competition for High Schools and Intermediates

Participation Rules

Napier is 150 years old this year and there are a number of events planned to celebrate this milestone. The Taradale Business Association is organising a Taste of Taradale community Cultūra Festto take place on the 27th of July. This competition is part of this winter fest and winners will be announced at the event on Saturday the 27th of July 2024.

Competition Brief:
Produce a 30 seconds to 3 minute long video telling the story of life 150 years ago. The film could cover areas such as transportation, the Taradale toll road, traditional folk songs or other music, cultural groups, foods invented at that time, games played, what school or church was like, clothing and fashion and anything else you learn from your research. While the topic is 150 years old, the film needs to speak to today’s audience.

Winners Announced:
Films will first be shown at a formal dinner on Friday the 26h of July 2024 and will then be displayed to the general public at the event on the 27th of July 2024. The films on display will be at the discretion of the organisers and is subject to the number of entries received and the quality of the entries. This means not all entries are guaranteed to be displayed. At least one team member needs to represent the team at the announcement of winners on the 27th of July 2024 in the Taradale Hall.

Competition Rules:

1.

Teams of students from Napier High School and Intermediate Schools are eligible to compete (all students should currently be enrolled in the same school).

2.

Each team should have five team members (one should be the team leader).

3.

Each team should have permission from their school to enrol and have an adult school representative.

4.

Each school can enrol a maximum of three teams.

5.

Teams can create their films in any medium they choose. Teams are encouraged to think about the strengths of their team members and decide who plays what role in making the films. 

6.

Music and sound may be sourced. Team members are not expected to create their own from scratch but may do so if they have the ability/desire. Music/Sound must be royalty/copyright free (this is important as you do not want YouTube to remove your film).  

7.

All team names should be in good taste. No matter how cool you think it is – a team with an offensive name will be asked to come up with another name or may be disqualified.

8.

Team names and film content must not discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, colour, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin(ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation.

9.

There is no restriction about your frame rate as long as you can successfully upload the film to YouTube and it is 30 seconds to 3 minutes long.

10.

Films must have a team name card at the start of the film. This should include the following text: ‘Historic Cultūra Film Competition 2024. Presented by The Taradale Business Association’

11.

No personal names or school names to be used in the film.

12.

No end credits to be included in the film. This is to ensure anonymity for judging purposes.

13.

Teams must create a new public YouTube account and upload the film to it. Use your team name not your personal names. Do not use your personal You Tube account. That way the judges do not see the team members’ name. 

14.

Make sure your YouTube video is set to public not unlisted or the judges may not be able to see your film. Do not designate your film “content for kids” or it will be blocked from playing on our playlist.

15.

The team leader should submit their final film entry by Friday, 12 July 2024 no later than 5pm.

16.

Click the link for “Final Submission Form” and fill out the required information. If you do not submit your film with this form, your film will be disqualified!

17.

Film entries received after the closing date and time will be disqualified.

18.

Films may strictly not be shared by team members with anyone prior to the winners being announced on the 27th of July 2024.

By submitting your film you agree that The Taradale Business Association may use your film for any reason related to the 150-year celebrations and future Taradale marketing and promotional purposes.
